You're on the fence about getting engagement pictures...

With all the money you're putting into your wedding day, an extra bit for engagement photos may feel like a lot. Believe me, I get it! I'm a big fan of staying in budget for weddings!

I do however believe that engagement photos are something you definitely don't want to skip out on. There are so many practical and emotional reasons why getting engagement photos are so important. Here are 6 reasons why I recommend to my couples to get their engagement photos taken!

1. being engaged is a big deal! celebrate it!!

You're likely only spending an average of a year of your whole life engaged! This is such a short amount of time for something so big, special and exciting. Celebrate your engagement by getting engagement photos taken early in your wedding planning. It gives you and your partner something fun to do to kick things off! Hey, take some champagne, or plan a special date after the session to really celebrate it big!

2. GET TO KNOW YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER BEFORE THE WEDDING DAY!

Your photographer is the vendor you'll spend the most time with on your wedding day. We're with you from start to finish! Plus when the wedding day is over, one of the few remaining pieces you still have from your big day are your photos (think about it, the flowers die, the food is gone, no more DJ spinning songs). Hiring a photographer that clicks with you and understanding how they work is KEY! Save yourself stress by getting to know your photographer more before your wedding day.

And if you learn your photographer may not be the right choice for you and your wedding day after you go have your engagement session, you can always cancel and find another! Or, test out a few photographers with engagement sessions before committing to one for the big day!

3. use your photos for wedding planning & decor!

  • SAVE THE DATES: I find this to be one of the biggest uses of engagement photos! Show off your love to your guests as you kindly ask them to save your wedding date!
  • WEDDING WEBSITE: You can incorporate your engagement photos all over your wedding website. It's 2025, every couple has a website, app, social media account, etc. for their wedding. Using professional photos over that selfie from someone else's wedding elevates the whole look!
  • GUESTBOOK: I love seeing couples use their engagement photos in a guestbook. You can order a professionally printed one (what I recommend) or one from Shutterfly even, and have guests sign and write well wishes to you in white space alongside your gorgeous engagement photos.
  • FRAMED PRINT OR CANVAS: I've had couples professionally print their favorite engagement photos to use on their welcome table or to use as decor throughout their reception.

4. GET comfy in front of the camera!

You may have only had professional photos taken of yourself once, right? Those awkward senior photos your mom made you get. It can be overwhelming to think that you'll never have had experience in front of the camera with a professional photographer until your wedding day. Guys. That's a lot of pressure to add to an already stressful day!

Having an engagement session gives you time to loosen up and own your confidence in front of the camera. You can learn what posing works for you (or doesn't work), give feedback to your photographer, and shake off any nerves! This helps your wedding day photos go so smooth- (which could even give you extra time back into your timeline!).

5. you only have photos together that are selfies!

Eek!! This is all too common! All you have are selfies or poor quality phone pictures after years of dating! Treat yourself to an engagement session!

6. CONNECT WITH YOUR PARTNER!

Wedding planning can feel like a lot. It can be hard finding the time to reconnect to your partner. An engagement session is an hour or so of designated time to really focus on the two of you. You'll get to explore new poses together, see beautiful sites, kiss (a bunch), and take time away from looking at screens or dealing with the general busyness of life!

I always recommend to my couples to make reservations after their session to extend the special bonding time! You're already dressed up and out- make it a time to focus on the two most important people!
