What is an unplugged wedding...

A ceremony is unplugged when the couple specifically requests no use of phones, tablets, cameras, etc. during their ceremony. It's a way to ensure guests are present for this pivotal moment! And it allows for better photos- no one gets in the way of the photographer or videographer AND we get to see people's faces in photos, rather than capturing guests look at their devices.

tip no. 1: signage

have a simple sign stating that your ceremony is unplugged.

putting this sign right by the entrance to your ceremony space where guests walk is ideal!

tip no. 2: spoken

have your officiant kindly inform guests that no cell phones, tablets or cameras should be used during the ceremony.

This is most impactful said before the processional- when the wedding party start walking down the aisle at the start of the ceremony.

tip no. 3: PROGRAM

INCLUDE THAT YOUR CEREMONY IS UNPLUGGED IN YOUR PROGRAM DESIGN.

PRO-TIP:

Use all three! I find Tip No. 2, a spoken reminder from your officiant, is the best at warding off unwanted phone use during your ceremony. There's something about being verbally told in front of everyone that keeps the cell phones away! I'm not one for peer pressure, but it sure works in these situations!

BONUS TIP!

Your guests LOVE you! They really want a photo of you getting married! A more recent trend I've seen has the officiant make a quick exception to the unplugged rule right after the processional and the couple is standing at the front of the ceremony space! The officiant informs guests that they can pull their phones out and take photos of the couple for 30 seconds. Guests love this! It's easy, joyful and again helps in keeping the phones away for the rest of your ceremony!
